Educator

• Provide reasonable opportunities for the student intern to gain experience.
• Meet regularly with the Student intern to review and assess the Student intern’s progress and to verify the student intern’s training activities.
• Suggest additional training, supplemental educational activities and additional opportunities for the Student intern to demonstrate expanded capabilities.
• Confer with the Student intern’s Employer about the Student intern’s progress.
• Provide guidance and motivation to enhance the Student intern’s growth.

Student intern

Student interns are responsible for gaining the experience that will satisfy their school’s requirements. In the end they will have created a multimedia portfolio of real world production that will assist in their job search.

Student interns must:

• Document their experiences for the employer’s and educator’s review and verification.
• Meet regularly with the educator to review and assess their progress.

How Virtual Internships Work

Students register for the internship at a URL provided by Abeng News Magazine on the site (see below). On completion of the registration they post their résumés which are reviewed by Abeng News editors. Online student interns remain in their institution using school- or home-based equipment under the supervision of the educator.

Duration

Internships are for a month and will include the completion of at least two and not more than four assignments depending on complexity. If co-op credits are needed, it is assumed that the intern has contributed 32 hours or work.

Technology

The core of the Abeng News site is powered by the open source WordPress blogging application engine. This is supplemented by a number of off-the-shelf and customized plug-ins to enhance administrator, writer and visitor experience through multi-media and automation. A basic manual is provided on writing and editing posts and adding media files.

Resource Personnel

The university/academic community has a wide array of professionals who should be easily accessible as specialists for interview and consultation. Abeng News Magazine’s editors and other contacts as well as the interns’ teachers are available for guidance.

Assignment Process

• interns are notified by email about their assignments when they are posted on the site’s virtual Assignment Board. Educators may suggest assignments for interns.
• intern uses email, instant messaging or other Web methods for conferencing as necessary
• intern does research and writes articles which are posted to the site for editing
• photo, video or audio files are uploaded/attached in appropriate type and format.
• editor reviews post and contacts intern for clarification or comment
• item posted live by editor
• intern reports if necessary, to educator

Expenditure

Interns should not incur any additional expenditure to complete assignments. If an interview, photo or recording requires travel within a reasonable radius from the campus or home the intern should raise the issue with the editor so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

Internship Outcomes

After completing this internship, students will have:

• practised techniques for finding, analysing and assessing information available on the Internet for application in all forms of journalism
• completed content creation for the Web to demonstrate the ways in which it differs from traditional print and broadcast journalism
• demonstrable working knowledge of code and software including blogs, image editing, content management and multimedia creation
• a better understanding of the debates surrounding journalism in a transformative media landscape

Book Prizes

For interns in Caribbean-based institutions, Abeng News Magazine and its sponsors will provide prizes for four book grants of US$150 each in the first semester and a similar number in the second for the intern who writes the best story in “Science & Technology, Energy and the Environment”, “Politics, the Economy and Finance”, ”Arts and the Humanities” and “Sports and Recreation”.

All articles completed during a semester will be considered for one of the four book awards for that period. The prizes will be judged by the editors in consultation with teachers based on quality, thoroughness and innovativeness.
