The irony of this transformation is that a considerable number of Americans are not even cognizant of this economic demise and collapse of America. Remarkably, many are of the perspective that the halcyon days of America will return for whatever reason or reasons not realizing that the policies incorporated over the last thirty years by the political and business elites have brought America to the economic cliff. To explore the manifestations of such policies, the information from <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/our-debt-time-bomb-is-ready-to-go-ka-boom-2010-02-02?siteid=nwhfriend" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Market Watch</a> can or may, also, be instructive in a similar manner to Mr. Doug Halsal's piece. There are two worlds; one that most Americans think exist and then there is the real world. While we prosecute evil around the world, we ignore and, in fact, promote evil right here in the USA. Two examples come to mind: harassing 8 year olds at airports to "show" how well we are doing fighting "evil", and the imprisonment of our poor and less fortunate as a final solution in warehousing those people. We forget that the entire world now have access to REAL information and they are not so easily impressed with our 'cowboy' and macho presentations any more. Quickly, it is being shown that the emperor has no clothes. What truly bothers me is the fact that we were so easily persuaded to compromise our ethics and principles for the sake of profits in an ill conceived war and we have yet to come to terms with that. I still believe in the America that once boasted of trying to achieve "Liberty and Justice for all..." I just do not know how to achieve it. Until economic development appraisal, begins to focus on HOW quality-of-living and Human Development are affected by prevailing micro as well as macro economic management decisions, our society "will be going to hell in a handcart". Consistent with capitalist doctrine, it is quite normal for entrepreneurs and banks to aim to maximize their private profits from LEGITIMATED trade. What happens in the remainder of the society is irrelevant to them, as long as the profits are forthcoming. It is the survival-centred inappropriateness and shortsightedness of capitalist socialization and conditioning, that is the problem.
